When I was growing up, I always thought working should be fun. I imagined myself being a fashion designer, a chemist or an environmental scientist... I didn't expect to make too much money but just enough to make a living. I should love what I do and have plenty of vacation time for leisure. However, life does not always follow what I had planed. Back in China, I worked hard in school. And when I graduated from college, a teaching position suddenly opened up for me. I never thought I could be a teacher because of my fear for public speaking. But, I did and I enjoyed being a teacher. I could help younger people learn skills they need in the future while gaining respect from my students. My students' curiosity, eagerness to learn and their young spirit also gave my life energy. More importantly, I had plenty of vacation time during school breaks as I wished. I could do things I love to do, such as watching movies and traveling. Four years ago, my life took a big turn again when I married my husband and moved to United States. This was very dramatic for me. Now, I come to a different country, living in a different culture and environment. I have to start from scratch again. Though I still love teaching, I will have to learn the language and improve my reading and writing proficiencies. It will take a lot of effort and sacrifice. Since my son was born 3 years ago, I have suffered from terrible allergies. I had to constantly seeking medical treatment. It also prompted me to search for medical knowledge. In the process, I am thinking maybe I should seek a career in medical field such as nursing. Nursing is in high demand right now. As a nurse, I could help others and myself to understand diseases and their proper treatments. It maybe the a perfect choice for me since biology and chemistry are my favor subjects.

  1. Great post, Li. I'd love to hear more about how your experiences as a teacher shape the way you approach being a student again.

  2. :) Li, i have never had any allergies before i moved to to New York.. :( Local ecology, better to say, lack of it, plays a tremendous role in how we feel. Chemistry and biology will help you learn more about human body and it's interaction with the environment, and who knows? maybe you come up with some substance to solve the problem of so many people? Good luck and sunny vibes in your new beginnings!
